FINDING MEANING IN LIFE Part 1
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made… (Psalm 139:14a)
Do you think you are unique or special? Well, whether you believe it or not, you are. The Bible says, you are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” There is no one else like you in this world, nor will there ever be anyone else like you in this world. You are one of a kind. You are unique in your physical design, emotional design, and in every other way God has designed you.
God designed each of us uniquely for Himself so that He might enjoy us, that we might enjoy Him, and that we might live our lives to the fullest potential that God intended for us to reach. When we talk about the potential that God intended for us to reach; we simply mean, that God, wants us to have purpose, meaning, security, happiness, fulfillment, and satisfaction in life. These are all God-given desires that God has put into the heart of human beings and they are desires that God wants every human being to enjoy. However, many people though fearfully and wonderfully do not have any of these things in their lives, and the reason they don’t is because, they are looking for them in the wrong places.
Robert McGee said, “In our search for significance, many of us continue to seek our security and purpose from worldly sources: personal success, status, beauty, wealth, and even approval from others.”
People are looking for the meaning of life! The significance of life! The fulfillment of life! Now this is not a new search, but it has been going on since the fall of Adam in the Garden of Eden. As a matter of fact, the entire book of Ecclesiastes is dedicated to exploring the difference between life and existence. What is the difference between life and existence? Well, life has meaning, purpose, security, happiness, fulfillment, and satisfaction; while existence is the opposite: no meaning, no purpose, no security, no happiness, no fulfillment, and no satisfaction. It is just living, breathing, struggling, and striving to continue to exist and not die.
People who live in this world and do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, just exist, and their just existing is understandable, because without Jesus Christ, they are dead in their trespasses and sins. Apart from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, there is no life; no spiritual or eternal life; no emotional life, no mental life, or any other kind of life, it’s just existence.
On the other hand, people who know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior have spiritual and eternal life. And they should also have emotional life, mental life, and every other kind of life, living life to its fullest potential in every sense. However, there are many believers who have spiritual and eternal life, but only exist emotionally, mentally, and physically in their lives. How could this be? What is it that would cause a person who has trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior and has the Holy Spirit living inside of them not to have meaning, purpose, security, happiness, fulfillment, and satisfaction in life, internally and externally?
I will answer that in our next newsletter, but until then, I want to encourage you to meditate upon (Psalm 139:14), and thank God that He has created and made you who you are.
