Legacy – “what you leave behind with the people you’re closest to after your gone; something handed down from one generation to the next.” A legacy is what lives on after you die. Every born again believer will leave a legacy behind them when they die and should seek to leave a lasting legacy of godliness for those who come behind them. Many believers will pass on to their next generation wealth, land, and other temporal inheritances, which will be a blessing to those who will inherit these things. And then there are many believers who will not leave behind a legacy of temporal inheritances for their next generation because they never accumulated those things in this life. But the truth is, passing on to the next generations a legacy with eternal value is far more important than a temporal inheritance of money and property. Every believer will leave a legacy behind them when they die, a legacy of their life and testimony. Every believer’s legacy will be one of godliness or ungodliness; one of service to Christ or service to self; one of a good example that future generations can follow or one they will remember as a hypocrite and reject. The question is not, if you will leave a legacy, because everyone will. The question is what kind of legacy are you going to leave? How will you be remembered? (Proverbs 13:22a), “ A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children…”
